Jesus In Prophecy

JESUS IN PROPHECY

Louis Cook

There are 100's of prophecies concerning the Messiah. We can learn a great deal about Him, His surroundings and His life from them.

The linage of the Messiah- Abraham [Gen. 12:3], Issac [Gen 17:19] Jacob [Num. 24:17] Jesse [Isa 11:1] David [Jer. 23:5]

(Micah 5:2) "But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity."  (NAS95) This eternal ruler would come from Bethlehem of Judah.

(Matthew 2:1) Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, -As was prophesied. Born of a virgin- Isa. 7:14- a miraculous conception by the Holy Spirit (Matt 1:25)

Children killed by a king- Jer. 31:15 -scholars are divided on this passage, some think it is a prophecy, others an application to the events recorded in Matt.2.

Call My Son out of Egypt- (Hosea 11:1) When Israel was a youth I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son. (Matthew 2:15) He remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: "OUT OF EGYPT I CALLED MY SON."

God revealed to Joseph that it was safe to return to Israel, the family returned to Nazareth where they had lived [Lk 2:4, 4:16] (Matthew 2:23) and came and lived in a city called Nazareth. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets: "He shall be called a Nazarene." There is NO recorded Old Testament prophecy, yet the inspired writers make reference these facts.

God spoke to Moses. Deut. 18:15-22 making reference to the prophet He would raise up from among his countrymen. (Acts 3:22) "Moses said, 'THE LORD GOD WILL RAISE UP FOR YOU A PROPHET LIKE ME FROM YOUR BRETHREN; TO HIM YOU SHALL GIVE HEED to everything He says to you. Stephen reminds them of the same thought in Acts 7:37-38, affirming that Jesus was exactly who God spoke to Moses about.

Son shall sit on David's throne- (2 Samuel 7:12-13) "When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. "He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever." (Luke 1:32-33) "He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end."

King is coming- (Zechariah 9:9) "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey." (Jer. 23:5) (John 12:15-16) "FEAR NOT, DAUGHTER OF ZION; BEHOLD, YOUR KING IS COMING, SEATED ON A DONKEY'S COLT." These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things to Him.

From these passages we learn that this king would bring wisdom, justice, righteousness, humility, and salvation, unlike any other.

Spirit of the Lord will be with Him-(Isaiah 61:1) The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners;  After Jesus was baptized, then tempted of Satan, He returned to Nazareth, entered the synagogue and stood to read -(Luke 4:18) "THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR. HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES, AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED. (Luke 4:21) And He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."

(Psalms 41:9) "Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me." (John 13:18) "I do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have chosen; but it is that the Scripture may be fulfilled, 'HE WHO EATS MY BREAD HAS LIFTED UP HIS HEEL AGAINST ME."

The most specific prophecies are recorded in Isaiah and Psalms concerning His crucifixion. Hands and feet would be pierced- Psa. 22:16-Thomas confirms the facts for us John 20:27 Gave Him vinegar to drink- Psa. 69:21- (Matthew 27:34) they gave Him wine to drink mixed with gall; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink.

No bones would be broken- Psa. 34:20 (John 19:36) For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, "NOT A BONE OF HIM SHALL BE BROKEN." Numbered with criminals- Isa. 53:12 (Luke 22:37) "For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, 'AND HE WAS NUMBERED WITH TRANSGRESSORS'; for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment."

Buried in a rich man's tomb- Isa. 53: 9 (Matthew 27:57-58) "When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him."

Raised from the dead- Psa. 16:10- (Acts 2:27) "BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT ABANDON MY SOUL TO HADES, NOR ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO UNDERGO DECAY. (31) he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that HE WAS NEITHER ABANDONED TO HADES, NOR DID His flesh SUFFER DECAY." Confirmed by many passages including (1 Corinthians 15:6) "After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep."

These are just a few of the enormous number available for study and confirmation of who Jesus was from the prophecies and confirmation.
